Overview

Elephants, and the mountain behind them.

Amboseli is a small park with a famous view: elephant herds crossing dry plains with Kilimanjaro rising behind them, just over the border in Tanzania. Its elephants are among the most closely studied in Africa, and the herds are relaxed around vehicles, which makes for long, unhurried sightings.

Spring-fed swamps keep the centre of the park green even in the driest months, drawing elephant, buffalo, hippo and a wide range of waterbirds. The mountain is usually clearest early in the morning, so Dexter plans the day around first light.
