Overview

Across the border, with someone he trusts at the wheel.

Dexter guides personally in Kenya only, and he is clear about that from the first conversation. In Tanzania he works with local partner guides he has known and trusted for years. You plan the whole safari with him, directly, and he travels with you; once you’re in Tanzania, a licensed local guide takes the wheel.

Northern Tanzania is the other half of the great migration story. The herds calve on the southern Serengeti plains early in the year, move north and west through the middle months, and reach the Mara River on the Kenya border from around July. Add the Ngorongoro Crater and the elephant country of Tarangire, and Tanzania pairs naturally with a Kenya safari.

Many guests combine the two: the Masai Mara with Dexter, then the Serengeti with his partner, planned as one trip with one point of contact from start to finish.

When to go

Tanzania, season by season.

Jan – Feb

Calving season

The herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti to give birth, and the predators follow. Warm, mostly dry and a remarkable time to visit.

Jun – Oct

Dry season

Classic safari conditions across the north. The migration moves through the western and northern Serengeti, and Tarangire is at its best as animals gather near the river.

Mar – May

Long rains

The wettest months, heaviest in April. Fewer vehicles and lower prices; some camps close.

Combining Kenya and Tanzania?

Tell Dexter your dates. He'll tell you honestly which side of the border the herds are likely to be on, and plan the crossing with you.
